But there was no room for sentiment for the flying back as he scored a second minute opener after latching onto Paul Warwick's pass before capping a fine team move for a second score after the break.
"I was pleased to get a couple of tries," smiled Howard. "From a personal perspective, the Sevens did not go how I really wanted it to so it was nice to get back out in 15s where it is a bit more familiar.
"The tries weren't too special but it's nice to support the plays we are making and you saw with Paul Warwick at ten how good he is at pulling the strings.
"It was a bit of a rusty night for us, but that is always the case on day one in pre-season games. We are working towards the start of the season and things will only get better.
"I haven't played full back since the Under-20 Six Nations and that was the first time for the first team here, it is something I would like to do more but I am happy as long as I am on the field.
"It was a challenge, I have learnt a lot from Chris Pennell an also Paul Warwick who has played a bit there so I am pleased with how I went."
Howard admitted there were a number of familiar faces in the Rotherham ranks after his playing spell up north. And the impressive performance of the RFU Championship side came as no surprise to him.
He said: "I know a lot of the Rotherham boys from when I was on loan there last season, they work hard and Lee Blackett, their new Head Coach, is a really good guy so we were under no illusions as to what a tough ask it would be.
"They came out and tested us. The second half was better from us and that is now a work on for the weekend against Cardiff Blues.
"There was a nice mix out there in terms of youth and experience," he added.
"We are a tight group and we have had a really good pre-season. We have bonded off the pitch as well as on it and we are learning about each other.
"There are a lot of new faces but hopefully we will keep improving and get better throughout pre-season.
"Fitness was key for us. We have worked hard in pre-season and I think that showed second half as we looked to get our game plan right. The forwards put in a great shift in the second half and drove us over a few times."
